Non é facile scegliere una borsa per un viaggio: comoda da trasportare, che ci permetta di trovare in fretta quel che ci serve, bella... Ognuno ha le proprie idee di comodità e di bellezza: a volte é piú comodo lo zaino, soprattutto se si deve camminare molto, a volte é meglio una tracolla, per tenere sotto controllo le tasche mentre ci spostiamo in bus. E poi ci sono le compagnie aeree, ognuna ha le proprie richieste su peso e dimensioni.
It is not easy to choose a bag for a journey: easy to carry, easy to find things in, nice... We all have different ideas about 'nice' and 'easy': sometimes we want a backpack, because we are going to walk a lot, sometimes we want a shoulder bag to check pockets while on a bus ride. And than there are airlines, with different ideas about weights and dimensions allowed.
Di solito viaggio usando il mio vecchio zainetto scolastico: è comodo addosso durante le camminate, ma ho sempre timore che possano aprirmi le tasche esterne durante i percorsi in bus, l'apertura solo in alto rende difficile raggiungere gli oggetti in basso nello zaino, ma, soprattutto, lo zaino è più piccolo rispetto al minimo ammesso per il bagaglio in cabina.
E con più piccolo, intendo più piccolo:
Usually I travel with my old school backpack: it is fine during walks, but I always worry for the items in the outside pockets, mainly for pickpockets on buses, the narrow opening on the upper side make hard to pick stuff from the bottom of the sack and, most of all, this backpack is smaller than cabin baggage requirements. Ho provato a cucire una borsa che si potesse usare come zaino e come tracolla e che ottemperasse alle richieste di diverse compagnie aeree. Per le informazioni sulle dimensioni per il bagaglio in cabina ho trovato questo schema (su Skyscanner, qui l'articolo): il minimo sembra essere 50 x 20 x 35 cm. Quasi le stesse dimensioni della defunta iniziativa "Cabin OK" di IATA.
I have tried to sew a bag that can be used as a backpack and a shoulder bag and that goes with measurements required by different airlines. I took information about cabine baggage dimensions in this cheat sheet (from Skyscanner, here): the minimum seems to be 50 x 20 x 35 cm. Almost the dimensions of the long gone "Cabin OK" initiative by IATA.
Ho testato la borsa durante un viaggio a Madrid.
La tracolla diventa davvero comoda solo quando é molto corta, ma cosí la borsa si ritrova diagonale. É un po' strana, esteticamente, però funziona. Ho camminato per 2,4 km (secondo google maps) per arrivare in aeroporto, usando la tracolla e non ho avuto problemi.
Ho provato lo zaino, ma gli anelli in metallo contro il collo sono poco piacevoli. Non sono molto soddisfatta del metallo: oltre a essere freddo, rende la borsa un po' pesante, inoltre gli anelli tintinnano e non mi piace essere rumorosa (è una considerazione un po' personale, forse...)
I have tried the bag during a trip to Madrid. The shoulder bag gets really comfy if the strap is very short, but in such a case the bag sits diagonally on the back. It looks strange, but it works. I walked 2,4 km (according to google map) to get to the airport and I had no problems. I tryed the backpack, but the metal rings were unpleasant on the neck. I do not realy like the metal rings: a part from being cold on the skin, they makes the bag too heavy, and they tinkle and I do not like being noisy (maybe this is a bit personal...)
Questo prototipo ha solo una piccola tasca esterna, comoda per chiavi, portafoglio e documenti, ma non sufficiente per contenere tutto ciò che va mostrato al controllo di sicurezza: liquidi e apparecchiature elettroniche.
La zip è troppo corta, servirebbe una maggiore apertura, per raggiungere comodamente ciò che è in basso nella borsa; servirebbe una zip a due cursori e non a uno.
Sarebbe bene trovare un modo di irrigidire la borsa: essendo morbida, può 'spanciare' se troppo piena e superare le dimensioni richieste. Ho provato utilizzando un materassino di gomma piuma cucito alla faccia più ampia della borsa, ma il risultato non mi ha convinta e ho preferito toglierlo. Potrei provare con delle cinghie di compressione.
This prototype has only a small zippered poket on the outside, handy for keys, money and papers, but too small to carry all the things that will be checked at security control: liquids and electronic devices. The main zipper is too short, a larger opening would be better, to reach stuff at the bottom; I should try a dual zipper. A more rigid bag maybe would be better: soft as it is it can loose shape if too stuffed and exceed dimensions. I have tried foam rubber sewn to the larger side of the bag, but I do not like the result and I removed it. I might try compression straps to keep it in shape.
Nel viaggio di ritorno ho caricato la borsa come bagaglio in stiva: credevo che ne sarebbe uscita distrutta, invece ha solo ceduto una cucitura di fissaggio per un anello. Però la borsa si è orribilmente macchiata. Avevo usato dello spray al silicone come protezione ma temo non abbia funzionato.
On the journey back I checked in the bag: I thought it would be destroyed, but it did well, only a ring's loop had almost been teared apart. But the bag got horribly stained. I used silicon spray to protect the fabric but I am afraid it did not work.
Prima e dopo il lavaggio, ovviamente a mano o i sei anelli di metallo avrebbero distrutto il cestello della lavatrice.

COMPITI PER LA PROSSIMA BORSA:
- tentare con un tessuto diverso, lavabile (ho delle vecchie fodere da divano che promettono bene)
- cucire con filo di nylon
- procurarsi degli anelli in plastica, magari a D, per evitare che ruotino nei passanti: Amazon a me!
- valutare una tasca ampia per gli oggetti da mostrare al controllo di sicurezza e una tasca piccola per documenti, facendo attenzione alla posizione, in modo da rendere la vita difficile ai ladri
- zip a due cursori e apertura più ampia
- cinghie di compressione
NEXT BAG NEW ITEMS:
- try a different fabric, washable (I have some sofa covers that might be good)
- seam with nylon thread
- get some plastic D ring, to avoid loops twisting . Amazon, on ward!
- think about a bigger pocket to semplify security check and a smaller pocket for papers, paying attention to their position, to avoid pickpocketing
- dual zipper and larger opening
- compression straps
